We are in our 25th year of the school but we are embarking on our 27th Musical Production. The fact that we had two in some years accounts for this. A unique feature of the Musical is that we invariably have two and occasionally three casts performing on the different nights. It is the ultimate nightmare for sound technicians but ensures optimum opportunity for the abundance of talented performers.
It is difficult to talk of favourites but a full production of HMS Pinafore which managed “to sail” in the Ballincollig G.A.A. Pavilion in 1987 in our first year was memorable. “Jesus Christ Superstar” was the first production to feature in the School Culturlann. Les Miserables was a first for an amateur group in Ireland and one of the most ambitious undertakings.
The present Musical Director, Catherine Frost, Artistic Director, Belinda Hutchinson, Choreographer, Philip McTaggart Walsh, Assistant Musical Director Ronan Holohan, Manager, Kieran Shanahan seems to have been there forever but were preceded by others including Fiona Leahy, John O’Connor and Anne Campbell. The largest Orchestra in Musical Theatre never fails to complement and enhance the wonderful staging.
We seldom repeat a show but the temptation to go for “Westside Story” 12 years on from our original production was too great. As we say every year “This one will be the best ever!”
