Well done to all our Young Scientists who represented Coláiste/Gaelcholáiste Choilm so well in the BTYSE 2022. Congratulations in particular to Diarmaid Lane, Eanna Whyte and Donnchadh Whelton who were Highly Commended for their project ‘A comparative study of the durability of conventional plastics and seaweed plastics for use in food packaging’. Congrats also to Thomas Kelly, Darragh Greene and David Lesiak who were Highly Commended for their project on ‘How music affects our perception of food’. Huge thanks and credit to Mr Scanlon & Ms. O’Sullivan for the incredible work they have done since September to encourage, support & prepare all seventeen students. The BT YSE is a wonderful opportunity to do science which is not restricted by the curriculum. The students’ ideas are products of their imagination and curiosity. Hypotheses are proposed, relevant experiments run, data collected and analysed and conclusions drawn. When interviewed by the judges students get to describe and defend their study. This is always a positive and huge learning experience.
