Over the weeks of spring 2016 Colaiste Choilm marked this major historical event of national significance. We had a whole school celebration with participation of students and staff across the year groups and across different subject areas. As well as the ongoing displays within the school there were four main events organised:
1. History Week / 29th February – 4th March.
2. Proclamation Day – 15th March.
3. Formal Commemoration 16th March.
4.Tree Planting Ceremony.
History Week 2016 will take place in Colaiste Choilm from Monday February 29th until Friday March 4th. This annual event will focus on the 1916 rising, the events leading up to it and its significance. The week will involve all students taking part in an interactive show of drama, music and song.
The 1916 Rising is also featured in numerous student centered displays around the school and the presentation of a special mural featuring the signatories of the proclamation. Maps, timelines, letters and pictures capture the essence of the 1916 rising in Colaiste Choilm.
In addition on the 15th of March the tricolour will be raised outside the school by members of the defence forces and a commemorative tree will be planted. We hope to live stream this to all the classrooms in the school, along with our national anthem and a reading of the proclamation at noon.
On the 16th of March the school will hold a commemoration of the 1916 rising featuring music, folklore and song. Again the commemoration will be student centered and will focus on 1916 it’s folklore and histoy.
